Sand tray therapy is a method, not a license. Anyone offering it should also hold a mental health credential (LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, PsyD, PhD) and have specific post-graduate training in sand tray or play therapy.
Training and approach
- Where did you train in sand tray specifically, and how many hours?
- Do you hold a play therapy credential such as RPT or RPT-S?
- Is sand tray your primary method or one tool among several?
- What ages do you see most often?
Parent involvement
- How often will we meet without my child present?
- What will you share with me, and what stays private?
- Will you coordinate with our school or pediatrician?
Logistics and money
- Session length, frequency, and typical course of treatment?
- Fee per session, and do you file out-of-network claims?
- Do you offer a sliding scale, and how many slots?
- What's your cancellation policy during school holidays?
- How will we know whether this is working in three months?
