What It Costs in NYC — and How Insurance Usually Works
6 min read
Most child therapists doing sand tray work in New York City are private pay. Ranges vary by borough and credential, and the number a practice quotes is rarely the number you end up paying if you have out-of-network benefits.
Typical private-pay ranges
Expect roughly $175-$300 per 45-50 minute session in Manhattan and brownstone Brooklyn, and $125-$225 in Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Doctoral-level clinicians and RPT-S supervisors sit at the top of those ranges.
Out-of-network reimbursement
Ask for a superbill — an itemized receipt with diagnosis and CPT codes. Many plans reimburse 50-70% of an allowed amount after a deductible. Call your insurer and ask specifically about the allowed amount for CPT 90834 with an out-of-network provider in your zip code.
Lower-cost routes worth trying
- Training institute clinics, where supervised clinicians see families at reduced fees.
- University-affiliated child programs and social work training clinics.
- Asking directly about sliding-scale slots — many practices hold a few.
- School-based counseling as a bridge while you sit on a private waitlist.
